Seems as though the South American drug cartels are going high tech- They are building crude submarines to haul their drugs in. This is a video from the United States Coast Guard intercepting one of these subs. As you can see, although they resemble the type of sub used in the civil war, they are quite effective and reports are that they can carry as much as 20,000 lbs. of cargo at 15 knots. In the last 6 months alone, the Coast Guard has intercepted 42 of these crafts!
Good news for podcasting: I just found a post over at Podcasting News which goes into detail about the current stats surrounding audio and video podcasts and they continue to grow!
Watch from the viewpoint of this hiker as he very carefully navigates an ‘Indiana Jones style’ trecherous pathway called El Caminito del Rey (The King’s Pathway), all along holding a video camera. This hike is located along the steep walls of a shear cliff in El Chorro, Spain. After watching this I couldn’t help remember a hike I did up Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park. There’s similarities but not even Zion can touch this imo.
To say that this is anything less then ‘AI’ or downright spooky even, would be an understatement. I especially enjoyed the part where the tech tried to kick it over. This is the results of government funding (reportedly $10 million dollars) from DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. From it’s website:
“The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense (DoD). It manages and directs selected basic and applied research and development projects for DoD, and pursues research and technology where risk and payoff are both very high and where success may provide dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions.”
Boston Dynamics is the brains behind this robot and it will be interesting to see it’s advances. Here’s a direct link to their website page on it.
Basic stats:
Climbs slopes up to 35 degrees
Walks across rubble
Carries a 340 lb load
Need to relax? Join my wife and I for a stress free walk down the beach in Carmel. We’ll talk about everything and anything for 25 minutes or so, and along the way we’ll listen to sea birds, hear waves crashing, take in all the dogs, and point out a few jelly fish on the sand. I also spot the most incredible mansion I’ve ever seen, ponder if abalone’s have shells, and ask, “What the hell kind of dog looks like an overgrown Poodle?”
All that and more on this special ‘alternative’ edition of the PlaneMadness Podcast. ~Capt’n Chris
Here’s that mansion~ Drag/Zoom as much as you like…
