Radio 1950's

It’s PlaneMadness Episode 38, brought to the comfort of your home using modern radio transmitters and 1950’s era technology!

More of the ongoing “Shoot’Em from the Hip” mentality in this episode, but I think this week’s a little more solid and tidied up. Also, I’m still getting my audio gear back into a state of ‘fine tune’ so please be patient while I continue tweaking things back into a state of harmony!

  • LA International Airport By Susan Raye - 2:12
Check out this nostalgic song from 1971 about a great airport and a great era.
  • Celebrity’s and Rice in China - 4:40
Anne Hathaway, Dana Delany, and Gloria Allred?
  • Fanwing Technology - 7:50
What it is: Reel fan running length wise from wingtip to wingtip that turns like a paddle wheel on a river boat and produces lift. I’ll talk a little about it, tell you what I think of it, and what I think it’s obvious strengths and weakness’s are.

  • Homebuilt Aircraft Hit by Car on California Highway - 11:20
Friend of a friend of a friend (aviation’s a small world) has to put it down on a California highway. Apparently after the problem(s) were resolved he departed only to be struck by a car. Unfortunately he did not make it. The airplane was a Titan Tornado.

  • Harrier Emergency Landing.. On Mattresses! - 13:00
Harrier Jet unable to lower it’s gear through normal means bypasses emergency procedure and instead lands on mattresses. Unfortunately, a lot of the mattresses went through the engine.
    Series of Pictures
  • Pan Am Commercial - 16:40
  • Oakland Air Traffic Control Tower Gets Strafed - 20:15
A great piece of recorded aviation… Check out how this Red Bull Air Racer (pilot & plane yet to be identified) buzzes the control tower on a video that was shot from within the tower cab. Possibly best of all, are the controller’s reactions.

  • Icon Aircraft A5 - 21:43
More on the Icon Aircraft A5 light sport aircraft, including my phone conversation with Steve Pegram, Communications Director.

How NOT to introduce your future wife to flying

…And what not to say afterward!

  • “Your hair looks fine!!!”
  • “Awe comm’on honey, at least we brought the handy wipes…”
  • “Yeah I know she’s cute and hot and didn’t puke.. but HE’s THE ONE who brought her…”
  • “There wasn’t that much vomit, besides most of it went back in your mouth anyway!”
  • “See, wearing glasses isn’t all that bad..”
  • “Here, let’s go comb that out.”

Get Home On Time

Check out this video from Cessna, chronicling the day of two businessmen as each utilizes a different mode of air travel - One travels with the airlines and the other with a private charter company. The two videos are synced and reflective of the kind of impact that private charter travel makes on a person’s day. That impact is quite amazing, but even more amazing to watch…

I predict that the private charter industry will see the same kinds of changes in the next 10-15 years that the airlines had throughout the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s as far as bringing more of their product to the masses; And I think we’ll see a lot of that sprout up in the form of air taxis, most likely.

EDIT**
Note the very minimal time the individual taking the airlines is shown in TSA security screening. My guess is that the ad agency goofed on this one, but otherwise it’s a well done piece in my opinion.

Negative ghost rider, the pattern is full…

This was during the Red Bull Air Races of 2005 or 2006 and is footage of one of the planes buzzing the Oakland Control Tower. The unique thing is that this footage was taken from inside the tower. Note the controller’s reactions, as they make for the icing on the cake.
