Wing Strike from…

After watching this several times, I have to stand corrected. Yes there may have been some wind shear involved, but in terms of ‘primary causes’ and ’causes and effects’ this deserves a little more attention. First, judgment and decision making go a long way in aviation and this is a prime example.

Hamburg Airport has two runways- 05/23 and 15/33. From the wind, it looks like they were trying to land on Runway 23.

Now, here’s the winds from the Hamburg metar on 3/01/2008:
01 1350 SA EDDH TEMPO 30035G55KT
01 1420 SA EDDH TEMPO 30035G55KT
01 2150 SA EDDH TEMPO 30030G45KT

Finally, here’s my take on ‘the mechanics’ of what happened.

They make the approach crabbed then kick out the nose with rudder at the last minute to line up with the centerline. Now, at this point you’d add aileron into the wind to keep the upwind wing tip down. I cannot tell if that was done in this video. The right wingtip lifted up with the wind (which the airline was calling a 155 MPH gust) and the rest is history as the pilots struggle to get the airplane back and on the go around. I heard that they landed on a different runway after this, I’d have to assume it was runway 33.

Check out this video of another one…. This time it’s a Swiss Air jet landing at London City Airport on the afternoon of January 17th, 2008.

  1. Wow - that must have caused some damage, and not just to the pilots reputation. Have you heard anything further about this, what structural damages if any this aircraft incurred? Would these guys get a call into the chief pilots office?

Here’s how it should be done…

  2. My understanding was that it was limited to the wingtip itself, and my further understanding is that they are deferrable on the Airbus line of A/C. Also I heard that this aircraft was back out online in a very short time.

  3. Actually, I should have been a little more clear, I was referring to the BAe in the second vid…

  4. Oh yea… sorry.

Actually I don’t have any info on this one. It’d be great to get some though as I’m also wondering about it!

  5. You know what they say right…?

    “It’s not the airplane’s fault…
    It’s not even the pilot’s fault….
    It’s the ASPHALT!”

    Hehe

  6. i think the swiss BAe is on airliners.net if you ever check there. just wondering…

  7. nevermind do not look on airliners.net for any pics. the only thing i found was this.
