Aloha Airlines 1946-2008

Aloha logoIt is with both sadness and anger that I write this post.

As many of you may already know, Aloha Airlines announced yesterday, March 30, 2008 that today would be their last day of passenger operations. They announced their bankruptcy just 10 days ago, the second time in the last 4 years- The first being on December 30, 2004.

Aloha has 3,482 employees according to Wikipedia. A few of those employees I have had the pleasure of knowing over the years - One of them real well. My original simulator partner at my present airline went off to Aloha some years ago. For the purposes of discussion, we’ll just call him Matt. Since Matt was from Hawaii, it was a good fit. Usually, but not always, simulator (sim) partners develop a special symbiotic, almost brotherly relationship- Kind of like Maverick and Goose in the 1986 movie ‘Top Gun.’ You could say that Matt and I hit it off pretty good.

I remember when Matt upgraded to Captain over there and how I had a well meaning jealous zeal over the whole thing- He was flying from the Islands in a 737-800 to the mainland once a week and things were good. But as all of us in the airline industry know, things rarely stay “good” forever, hence the analogy “fire and ice” being used to describe this career choice of ours and it’s near constant state of change.

Aloha Airlines 737Well things did change. 9/11 brought financial hardships and Aloha declared bankruptcy in December of 2004. But, they emerged in February of 2006 as a leaner, meaner operation.

Along came Mesa

I could do an entire post just on Mesa Airlines itself but for sake of time (and better ways to allocate server bandwidth) I won’t. Just let the picture of the billboard below speak for itself. But let me just say that I really can’t think of one good thing to say about Mesa, except that there’s been an old ditty for a long time regarding their pilots - “Good folks trying to make the best of a bad situation…”

Using five Bombardier CRJ-200 regional jet aircraft, Mesa formed a sub-division known as Go! airlines and on June 9, 2006 started flying inter island in direct competition with Aloha. Two separate lawsuits were filed, one by Hawaiian Airlines and the other by Aloha. Each accused Mesa of using confidential details it got about each respective carrier’s operations (through it’s meddling in their bankruptcy proceedings) to compete unfairly.

Well the short story is that Mesa lost the lawsuit against Hawaiian and was ordered to pay $80 million dollars in damages. In an interesting side note with circus atmosphere like overtones, about a week after the first suit was filed, Mesa’s chief financial officer George Murnane III sent an email to an acquaintance asking for information on how to delete computer files so that they couldn’t be discovered. Mesa placed him on paid leave, saying that he was browsing porn and needed a way to cover it up. Perhaps that should give some good insight into what we’re dealing with here in the way of character - And I’m not talking about the porn.

BillboardAnyhow, Mesa continued it’s Go! operation with ticket prices that many in the industry considered unsustainable and a direct attempt to drive it’s competitors out of business. (Of note is the part in Aloha’s press release where it specifically states “unfair competition has succeeded in driving us out of business” which also seems to be referring to the reasons behind the $80 million dollar judgment.)

Meanwhile things started heating up- The website www.dontflygo.com launched and Mesa even went after Aloha Pilot Mike Uslan individually in Arizona Federal Court for his participation in Hawaii’s airline Employees Repelling Ornstein, or H.E.R.O. This was later dismissed by the Arizona Judge for several amusing reasons, all of which can be found here.

(By the way, you can donate to help Mike pay off his legal bills incurred in fighting off Mesa here).

What’s Next

I have not spoken to my friend Matt. I intend to call him in a week or two after he’s had a chance to collect his thoughts and consider his options. I sympathize with his plight and that of several thousand Aloha employees.

At the same time, my overall disrespect level for another carrier’s management just went through the roof.

Deltalina Interview with Captain Joe d’Eon

Fellow podcaster and Airline Captain Joe d’Eon interviews Kat ‘Deltalina’ Lee. You can check out Captain d’Eon’s podcast at Fly With Me. It’s one of my favorite aviation podcasts.

I came away from this interview with a real respect for Kat, specifically with regard to the dedication you can tell that she has for her job and for Delta Airlines. All this fame apparently isn’t going to her head either- She says she has no intentions of getting into acting and that she really enjoys being a flight attendant.

Changes for PlaneMadness.Com

It’s been almost a year now since PlaneMadness.Com came online. In the past couple months I’ve been going through the mental rigamoro of deciding whether to keep it, if so where to take it, and what changes if any would prove beneficial to it’s success. Don’t get me wrong, I never really had any serious intentions of taking it away… But after a year I had to look at where it went versus where I wanted it to be coupled with the amount of work and time it takes away from my normal life to produce both the podcasts and to keep the site entertaining and informative… on a daily if not a weekly basis. I’d be dishonest with you if I said that it wasn’t a big commitment on my part.

The bottom line question though I have had to ask myself about all this is really pretty simple: Do I like doing it? The answer is a resounding “Hell Yeah…” With the industry and the economy at what seem to be new lows on an almost daily basis, I need to have something that brings me a little more fuel for this aviation fire that burns beneath my shorts… the one that’s been keeping me in aviation for all of my adult life now.

So in the last few weeks a lot of the energy usually reserved for podcasts & posts has been put into educating myself about taking the PlaneMadness podcast, website and brand to new heights, both functionally and commercially.

Starting tomorrow I’m planning to begin the change over process to the new server. A lot of what will be going on is back end server and database setup type stuff and it will not effect the front end (what you see). When the front end of the site moves though the site itself will be down for hopefully less then half a day. I expect all this to go on through the weekend as somethings are holding back others but the actual impact to the end user should be limited to just the site going down for several hours sometime between Friday and Sunday.

Let me say that first though, I’m going to cut Episode #31 tomorrow in the AM and get that out into the feed.

Now, right off the bat everything will probably appear to be the same and that’s my goal really- Changing servers is a lot like going flying… Even though it’s exciting, you really, really want it to be non-eventful. But the site will be hosted upon a foundation of new digital bells and whistles and that will allow me to pursue things that previously would have been out of reach or too much of a hassle. This is more then a physical hosting change; it’s a new beginning for PlaneMadness and I thought I’d let you know of some of the beneficial things in store.

Here’s what on the agenda in the near future, but not necessarily in this order:

Expanded content:
I want to produce a greater number of video podcasts, aviation oriented sound-scaping audio tours (using the walk on the beach episode as an example) and have more guests on the show. To that end I have purchased professional video editing software, upgraded my portable studio, and have been talking to people about participating in the show. This is the one area that will see the most growth.

New site logo/brand design: I’m going to be working with a nationally recognized logo company to establish a new feel for the PlaneMadness brand, and that will be integrated into the site as well.

Revenue Stream: I’ve been supporting this site out of pocket since the beginning (with the exception of you guys buying me Starbucks which I really appreciate!) and so in an effort to offset it’s costs to me, I have to at least attempt to produce some revenue with it. One of the things I personally hate the most about websites is traditionally targeted mainstream media advertising- Banners, pop ups, ads, etc. I’ve never clicked on a single one and so using that as a gauge I’m going to have to assume that most of you haven’t either. If I ever do a banner on this site my goal is to have less then 2 or 3 site wide. I see them as being annoying. Instead my focus will be on occasionally hocking stuff that I use in my daily flying that I think would be of benefit to you.. No commercials, just a few sentences here and there or an occasional audio post to the feed about a certain product- That way you have the option of downloading it or not. My goal is not to be intrusive with anything.

On that note I’m considering a separate “Premium” feed without advertisements which provides greater content then what I produce now, but that concept is still in it’s infancy and to be honest I haven’t given it a whole lot of thought compared to everything else.

So, in closing I just want to extend a very warm thank you for supporting the PlaneMadness Podcast through your continued subscriptions, website participation and word of mouth advertising.

It’s been on heck of a pleasure and I look forward to what the future holds!

Changing Hosts

Well it’s been almost a year already! Wow that went by fast. With this year’s passage I have been re-evaluating our host here at PlaneMadness. In wanting faster load times, more complete access to resources, and better customer support, I have decided to make a change. So, in the next week or so (announcement to come beforehand) the site will be down for less then one day hopefully while I mitigate the front and back ends of this place from one host to another.

More updates to come soon.
