It’s not a matter of if…

…with R/C airplanes, it’s a matter of when. Today was the Twist’s day.

Damage Assessment: Every fuse doubler either cracked or broken. Horizontal stab shattered at the hub. Elevator stringers separated. Wing has multiple gashes and internal injuries as is evidenced by loose parts banging around inside…

On a lighter note… All radio gear tests fine, servos deliver torque without binding, antenna intact, all other equipment fine. Engine built like a brick, no issues there either.

What happened? Low, slow, gust of wind, too little airflow over control surfaces to compensate so the only thing left to exit the vicinity of terra-firma was utilized: Pure power, which resulted in a spectacular torque roll into the ground.

Unfortunately no cameras were rolling. Tail makes for an excellent wall mount.

NOTE: Problem downloading to the iPod has been fixed. :D

Here’s the first FLYING video podcast. It’s live in the feed as well, at twice this resolution! Not subscribed in iTunes? You can subscribe by clicking on the iTunes icon in the upper left hand corner of the site.

Flip Video Camera from Wal-MartI purchased a cheap video camera from Walmart for the aerial stuff because I needed something that was somewhat ‘disposable’ seeing that these things crash and also I needed something that was solid state with no moving parts.

The hardest part was not the set up but the aspect ratios. My Sony video camera has selectable aspect ratios and I have it set to 16:9 for the iPhone and iTouch. The Walmart Camera is fixed at 4:3 but what would you expect from a $149 dollar video camera? Still, it functioned well under undoubtedly a lot of stress so from that standpoint I’m okay with it. Interestingly though, once rendered for YouTube the video got borders all of a sudden where the Walmart camera footage took over. But as far as I know those borders do not exist on the iTouch and iPhone (I don’t have either as lately I seem to be putting my resources into this podcast… but I do have a 5G Video iPod). Anyway, I’m still working on it, but it’s just one of those little things that once you think you’ve got it solved it comes back to bite you.

As far as the flying is concerned, I hope you like it, and DEFINITELY DEFINITELY DEFINITELY more to come! Actually my plan is to take this to the limits of both technology available to us civilians as well as $$$ constraints- I want to have full emersive remote controlled flying technology in my video podcasts.

More on that later though. :D
